HISTORY

Knollwood House was built in 1927 by a Mr. Burke of Philadelphia, perhaps a minister, it has been told, but certainly not on a minister’s salary. A coincidence, perhaps, but U.S. Open champion Billy Burke (from Connecticut) stayed at the house, likely in 1928, when he won the North & South Open. By then, the Knollwood enclave had become popular with wealthy Pennsylvanians who followed the Boyds of Weymouth (steel). In 1924, W.C. Fownes, Jr. (also steel) completed an elaborate winter estate on nearby Crest Road.

The Knollwood property enjoyed a storied early years, from flaunting the famed Glenn Miller Orchestra entertaining on the back lawn, to hosting the Ryder Cup celebration. The Manor was then purchased by Helen Gill, also from Philadelphia, and British husband, Edward Gordon-Mann, where they resided for some 40 years.

The house was converted to a bed and breakfast by Dick and Mimi Beatty in the 1990s, earning the title of "Southern Pines' premier B&B," according to Golf Digest. Since then, the Manor has hosted numerous famous golf professionals and legends that travel to the Pines for many of the top golf tournaments in the United States.

Today, the house seeks to maintain its historical Gatsby flair, reminiscent of a time of century past, whilst not compromising with modern amenities and comforts. Knollwood Manor will continue to be a staple of the Pines, affording the opportunity of those that visit to experience and live in both history and timeless luxury.
